Royal Marines get on their bikes for The C Group
Royal Marines team cycles the 2007 Tour de France route to raise funds for The C Group.
August 30th 2010
Major Simon Gray, Adjutant at CTCRM, accompanied by a team of 10 colleagues, successfully rose to an ambitious cycling challenge in July to raise over £20,000 for The C Group by following the exact route of the 2007 Tour de France.
Starting in London, the route crossed the channel and wove its way through the Alps and southern France before turning west for the Pyrenees, before finally heading north and finishing in Paris.

Team member and Inspector of Physical Training Royal Marines, Major Paul Curry, writes:-
Having successfully returned from our epic adventure and gathered breath, I thought I‘d take the opportunity to write and provide a foot note to what proved to be an extremely challenging undertaking in completing the Commandos’ Tour de France. The team surpassed even the boldest of predictions in that all 11 members managed to successfully stay the course and finish triumphantly under the arches of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. In summary over the 3 week period we successfully navigated through 4 countries, cycled 2,155 miles and climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest 5 times from sea level. This fantastic achievement was testimony to their individual preparation and dogged determination to overcome the physical and emotional demands of this endeavour. Indeed even the environmental factors proved at times very testing with extremes of weather to contend with. The collective resolve and camaraderie epitomised by the team was exemplified by lashings of ‘Commando Spirit’ in that it maintained cheerfulness in adversity!
The success of this venture could not however have been achieved without your individual and collective support and patronage. In recognition of that fact I thought it appropriate to take the time to update you on this grand event and to once again thank you for your continued support. I hope you were able to follow our exploits on the Blog and plot our progress, and in so doing take pride in your positive contribution in seeing this ambitious charity fund raising event become a reality. The sums of money raised so far exceed £20,000 and the media interest has undoubtedly raised the awareness and profile of the C Group which as you will be aware directly supports our injured Royal Marines. While this ambitious undertaking has been a resounding success the sad reality remains that with the conflict continuing in Afghanistan that further fund raising activity will inevitably follow and I hope we can continue to count on your enduring support in the months or years ahead.
With heart felt appreciation
