Rock The Heroes Raises £12,000 in Kirkaldy

Kirkaldy stepped forward in style on 20 February 2010, to raise £12,000 in memory of Cpl "Whisky" Walker RM, tragically killed in Afghanistan last year whilst serving with 40 Cdo RM.

Organiser Donna Paterson, cousin to Cpl Walker's widow, Leona, said:-

The family and I are very proud of Steve and all he did, so when he was killed in Afghanistan in May last year, our first thought was for my cousin Leona, their daughter Greer and Sam. Through this tragedy we decided to raise awareness and help as many Royal Marines and their families as possible. We did this through Rock the Heroes, with 7 bands, 2 DJ's, an auction and a raffle. We have raised eleven thousand pounds so far with more still to come in. We are very proud as Rock The Heroes was a major success and we plan to do it all again next year ... thanks, Donna X."

Representing The C Group and the Royal Marines on the evening, Lt Col Peter Kemp RM, CO RMR Scotland  said:-

"Wow, what a party!

There were 600 at the event in a local nightclub, and 8 live bands playing. The nightclub and all the musicians gave their time for free, so all entry fees went to the charity, along with the proceeds from raffles and an auction. I will let Donna Paterson (Leona Walker's cousin, and the brains and energy behind the event) give you the final figure, but I think that it will be over £10,000. It was a fantastic effort and great to see how a community can pull together.

I had a good chat with Leona and, as you'd expect, ....she did fantastically well considering she was the centre of attention for the whole day. I hope that she didn't find it all too much, but I expect she was probably quite glad when it was all over as it must have been quite an ordeal. There were 6 lads there from Cpl Walker's troop who, as ever, ..did a great job dragging her out to dance and generally making sure that she was on the move and having fun.

So, a success all round I think and it was a genuine pleasure to have been able to stand up and say thanks to the residents of Kirkcaldy for their overwhelming generosity."

Kieran, Al and Locky with Leona.
